Here's how we go about doing what we do!
The biggest challenge I face is right up front. Understanding what I'm going to create and, more importantly, why. Bringing a sense of purpose and intention to the project allows me infuse this energy throughout the construction. Hopefully this vibe is felt when the piece is finally released out into the world.
I visit my friends at Asheville Hardware, Bee Tree Hardwoods, and Caravati's and select boards that not only hold integrity, character, and figure, but also speak to me and complement my aesthetic. What is that exactly? The best way I can explain my style is that I love striking a balance between the masculine and feminine.
Wood is sorted and selected for the special piece. Each board goes through several phases of preparation to ensure it is "trued up" and ready for the woodworking process. This includes planing and squaring.
Depending on the frame design, the building process varies. However, every piece is hand crafted using traditional woodworking technique versus modern framing assembly. The benefit is that joints are incredibly secure and the pieces hold their form for not just years, but generations. They become heirlooms and appreciate in value.
I love pure tung oil. Each piece is finished using this organic non-toxic sealant. I prefer tung oil and wax over synthetics or polyurethanes because one, I'm philosophically opposed to plastic, and two, the grain and texture of the wood can still be felt to the touch. I apply the oil and wax by hand to ensure every nook and cranny of the piece is sealed and protected. And I also LOVE feeling the piece once it's finished.See the Finished Piece!
